Edinburgh excited as his Exiles power on

- By Matt Hill

BOSS Justin Edinburgh believes the buzz in his Newport dressing room is leading his team to great things after they continued their magnificent run in putting Carlisle to the sword at Brunton Park.

Goals from Yan Klukowski and Ismail Yakubu put County in cruise control before Brad Potts pulled one back.

But Shaun Jeffers’ late breakaway goal wrapped up the points and ensured David Amoo’s strike was mere consolation for the Cumbrians.

The victory marks eight games unbeaten in League Two, and Edinburgh insists his men can keep climbing into the promotion picture.

“I feel like we have a much stronger group of players this season,” he said.

“We are competitive, and that is one thing we will do every game, we will compete – and that always gives you a chance.

“I thought we made hard work of it towards the end but ultimately we’ll look back at it as another excellent away victory.

“Everyone in football knows that if you’ve got that togetherness and camaraderie in the dressing room then it’s a big part of getting success.”

The visitors were value for their victory from the first minute, and deservedly grabbed the lead with a great team goal.

Chris Zebroski found space on the right flank to show a clean pair of heels to Carlisle full-back Danny Grainger, before delivering a wicked swerving cross on to the head of Klukowski, which the midfielder guided expertly into the far corner.

Carlisle offered little in response in the first period, and straight from the restart County doubled their advantage. A corner whipped to the back post was met by unmarked centre-half Yakubu to bullet home.

It seemed that would be the strike to put Newport in the box seat, but a momentary lapse in concentration offered Carlisle a route back into the contest. After a long throw wasn’t dealt with, Carlisle midfielder Potts swept the ball into the far corner through a pile of bodies to reduce the arrears.

Carlisle pressed for victory, but in the end it was the visitors who killed it through substitute Jeffers on the break, before Amoo rolled in a consolation for the hosts.

Carlisle boss Keith Curle said:“We needed a big start to the second half the way the game was set, and to give such a cheap goal away that quickly is so frustrating.

“It’s very disappointing. I thought they did the horrible things better than us, and did it with conviction.

“They wanted the win more than us and were better in every area.

“We are firmly in a relegation battle and I need the players to realise that.

“We are in a fight, and we need to play with more desire.”
