CLINTON: I’VE STILL GOT THE KNACK

- By Matt Badcock

CLINTON MORRISON kept his shooting boots polished before joining Exeter City – by playing for Long Eaton United in the Midland League.

The former Crystal Palace, Birmingham City, Coventry City and Sheffield Wednesday striker scored two goals in three starts for the club, who play in English football’s ninth tier.

Morrison had been topping up his match fitness while waiting for a club after leaving Colchester United in the summer.

The 35-year-old told The Football League Paper: “I was doing some running at the gym and someone said, ‘You should play for Long Eaton around the corner’.

“They’re literally a minute away from me so I went down there and it’s a nice little set-up. I hadn’t played football for six months so it was to get my fitness back.

“The lads are great. Some could go and play higher. You’re a bit amazed going into Non-League after playing professional football. You don’t realise there are players who are up to scratch.

“I was buzzing to score last weekend and the week before. I’m on a little run now and back in the groove!”

Grecians fans will hope the former Republic of Ireland international, who has signed a non-contract deal, is just that as they look to maintain a play-off push.

“I know I’ve still got a lot to offer in the League,” he said.“It doesn’t matter about your age. You can play to any age you want as long as you keep yourself in good shape.

“Everyone has a different opinion or take on you saying, ‘Ah he can be this, he’s done that’. But I’m not a handful. That was me when I was 18 or 19. I’m a different guy now. I can help out in the dressing room a lot.”
