No let-up for Clough as Burton keep focus

- By Dan Gillott

BURTON Albion are powering their way towards back-to-back promotions but midfielder Robbie Weir insists there is no danger of overconfidence ahead of tomorrow night’s trip to Southend.

Last year the Brewers escaped League Two as champions, while Southend snuck through the play-offs to join them in the third tier.

And this season appears to be following a similar pattern, with Nigel Clough’s Burton top of the pile and Phil Brown’s Shrimpers loitering ominously outside the top six.

Now the two are set to meet on Monday at Roots Hall and Weir is eager to remind supporters his side are the dominant force in League One.

“We are not getting carried away by being top of the league,” said the 27-year-old. “We know we have a job to do with Southend away and then Walsall at home.

“We know we have tough games coming up and anyone who wants to play us is playing for their lives because we are up there and they have seen our defensive record. We have 16 games left and we will keep on pushing.

“It has rolled on from last year. When you win this many games as us it becomes a habit.”

Burton come into the game off the back of consecutive wins, while the Shrimpers have lost their last two in a row without finding the net.

However, Shrimpers midfielder Michael Timlin has no concerns about heading into the game as underdogs.

“Burton were always a hard team to play against in League Two and they are again this season in League One,” said the 30year-old.

“It took a while for teams in this league to give Burton credit for who they are and how they play. They do things in the right way, and they play with no fear so credit to them, but we don’t fear anyone as we try to make the playoffs.

“I think we might appear as underdogs, but people might fear us because on our day we are unbeatable.

“So we’ve got to make sure we cut out the silly little errors.”
