Wilson’s searching for home comforts

- By Michael Hale

CHESTERFIELD manager Danny Wilson hopes they can use their first home win of the season as a “stepping stone” to put their Proact Stadium woes behind them.

Poor home form saw the Spireites get dragged into a relegation dogfight last season but Chesterfield looked far from a doomed side in a dominant performance against Swindon.

Wilson said: “Our home form was terrible last year and it put pressure on us when we played away, which was very difficult.

“So this is a stepping stone to put that to bed. If we’re strong at home then we have a chance of competing at the top of the table.

“We could’ve had more goals to show for it but I thought their goalkeeper was outstanding.

“We can’t be too disappointed with three goals and three points, particularly in our first home game.

“We have another game on Tuesday and let’s hope confidence is sky high for that.”

Lawrence Vigouroux fantastically saved onto the post from Ched Evans’ goalbound header within the opening five minutes.

Vigouroux denied Evans via the woodwork again midway through the half but he could do nothing to prevent Gary Liddle nodding home the rebound.

Chesterfield should have had the game put to bed well before the break, but it took until first-half stoppage time to double the lead.

Evans was bundled over in the box and O’Shea fired home the spot-kick despite the inspired Swindon keeper getting a hand to his low drive.

After the break, Evans scored a home debut goal after Gboly Ariyibi pulled back for him to tap in from close range.

Darnell Furlong blasted in a debut goal of his own late on but it did little to appease frustrated Swindon manager Luke Williams.

He said: “I’m very disappointed with the performance of the Swindon team. Full credit to Chesterfield because they were excellent, but that’s no excuse for our performance.

“Vigouroux was the outstanding player in our side for sure. Without him the scoreline would’ve been a lot bigger.

“We had a well worked goal but it was too late in the day. I’m pleased for the boy but it really is a very small positive.

“It’s early in the season so there’s no need to be too devastated by this result but we need to look at some very key factors which made us play so poorly.”
