Leicester’s fairytale driving on Feeney...

- By Adam Diamond

WARREN Feeney says his Newport County side will take inspiration from Premier League champions Leicester City after finally ending a fivemonth wait for a win.

Claudio Ranieri’s heroes may have kicked off their title defence with a shock defeat at Hull City on Saturday but Feeney says their remarkable achievements can inspire underdogs throughout the land.

And the Newport boss will be dreaming of more unlikely triumphs for his men after this surprise 1-0 win at League Two promotion hopefuls Leyton Orient.

Defender Jamie Turley scored the only goal of the game in the first half as he bundled in a Mark Randall corner.

The visitors then produced a textbook rearguard action to frustrate Andy Hessenthaler’s men and the Brisbane Road crowd.

“I’m obviously pleased,” said Feeney, who hadn’t tasted victory since March 12.

“There’s been a lot of negativity and a lot of doubt this week but it’s a new team and I thought we went about our job superbly against probably one of the favourites for the league.

“Obviously you’re going to have to defend and we defended in numbers. “And we kept a clean sheet, which is the big thing for me.

“We won’t get carried away but I’ve said before that Leicester are the benchmark.

“If you get a good changing room and a good work ethic you can achieve anything.

“We showed that and I’m absolutely delighted, not just for the players but for the fans and the whole club because they deserved that.”

O’s manager Hessenthaler admitted his team weren’t up to scratch but also lamented a host of missed chances with striker Ollie Palmer the worst culprit.

“In the first half we weren’t at the races to be honest,” he said.

“I felt that we became too predictable with two big fellas up front and we just huffed and puffed.

“We started the game OK in the first five or ten minutes. We looked quite bright but then we seemed to lose our way.

“Second half we had a right go but we missed chances and unfortunately it came down to one set-piece and we lost the game.

“It’s not the start we wanted at home but last time we won five out of five and we still didn’t achieve our goal so we won’t get too disappointed by it.

“We won’t drop our heads but we have put ourselves under pressure now.”
