SHOCKS ALL OVER AS CUP FEVER IS UPON US!

- By Chris Dunlavy

LUTON midfielder Jake Gray says Luton knew an upset was on the cards even before Aston Villa were sensationally dumped out of the EFL Cup.

The 20-year-old – a summer signing from Crystal Palace – equalised after Andre Ayew had fired the Championship giants into a 13th-minute lead at Kenilworth Road.

A second-half strike from Cameron McGeehan and a calamitous own-goal from Jores Okore then saw the League Two side romp home 3-1 to set up a secondround clash against Leeds and Villa have had a poor start after going down.

“That was something we said before the game,” said Gray. “After last season, when they didn’t do too well, we thought that if we could get ahead and put on the pressure, they might crumble.

“They did that and we took full advantage. By half-time, everyone sensed that we had a real chance of winning. It could actually have been a load more.”

Another side celebrating a shock knock-out were perennial giant-killers Stevenage, who beat a strong Ipswich side 1-0 at Portman Road.

Teenager Ben Kennedy hit the only goal after 53 minutes to earn a home tie with Premier League Stoke.

“I think Stevenage were excellent,” said magnanimous Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy.

It proved a grim week for the Championship big guns. John-Joe O’Toole’s strike six minutes from the end of extra-time saw League One newcomers Northampton win 2-1 at Barnsley, while Gary Rowett’s Birmingham also suffered home defeat at the hands of Oxford.

Cambridge sealed one of the most impressive results, beating a weakened Sheffield Wednesday side 2-1 at the Abbey, and Brentford also suffered at the hands of League Two opposition, going down 1-0 at Exeter.

Rotherham lost a 5-4 thriller at home to Morecambe, Wigan were beaten 2-1 by Oldham, Shrewsbury defeated Huddersfield 2-1 and Chris Lines’ extra-time stunner saw Bristol Rovers beat Cardiff 1-0 to seal a glamour tie at Chelsea.

“It will be a great day out for our fans,” said Rovers boss Daryl Clarke.
