The Football League Paper

This could be a window of opportunity

-

THE next few days could have big ramifications for your team’s season. That’s because the transfer window ‘slams’ shut on Wednesday and the emergency loan system between windows has been scrapped.

To be honest, it was a bit strange in the Football League that the window closed and yet around a week or so later clubs could bring in players on loan.

Of course, there are positives and negatives of the emergency loan system.

Some will say that its demise will help the big clubs who have got more money and can stockpile players in the event of injury and suspension hitting them.

It’s argued that small clubs will be the ones to suffer because they won’t be able to bring in players to cover for those losses.

But everyone should be operating within their means and there is one big advantage of not having an emergency loan system.

It means that once the end of August has passed, clubs will have to work with what they’ve got.

If a team’s left-back is out injured and they haven’t got an experienced replacement, they may have to go for youth and give a young lad a chance.

Perhaps he wouldn’t have had that opportunity if the loan market was there to be plundered.

We talk about the lack of opportunities for young players at the top of the game, but here’s a golden chance to give youngsters a chance in the EFL.

Some will sink, others will swim. But the good thing is that they won’t be able to say they didn’t get an opportunity.

If the evidence of yesterday’s activity is anything to go by, the next few days are going to be busy on the transfer front.

Then it’s down to working with what you’ve got.
