Sarll the Snarl as Mariners romp it

- By Syd Phillips

SEETHING Stevenage boss Darren Sarll slammed his players for failing in every department as they were torn to shreds by Grimsby.

Mariners manager Paul Hurst felt his team had played better in defeat against Leyton Orient last week but, in truth, they did not need to get out of second gear to see off Stevenage.

Omar Bogle bagged a brilliant hat-trick and created the other goals from Luke Summerfield and Dominic Vose.

Fraser Franks and Jobi McAnuff registered for the visitors, but that did little to improve Sarll’s mood.

“We’re paid to do a certain job and we didn’t do that – it’s quite simple,” he said.

“There’s no need for an inquest into why that happened. If you don’t win tackles, don’t pass the ball properly and don’t shoot when you’ve got the opportunity, then that’s the outcome.

“Grimsby have taken every opportunity they had and could have had more if it wasn’t for our goalkeeper, but the manner of our performance always leaves you open to a result like that.

“Our performance level just wasn’t good enough.”

Bogle opened the scoring after receiving the ball from Ashley Chambers with his back to goal, then span, feinted to shoot, before stabbing in. Summerfield then exchanged passes with Bogle and side footed the second into the bottom corner.

Franks’ had his name misprinted on the team sheet, but he made sure he left his mark on this contest when he beat covering defender Danny Andrew to a lofted ball and looped in his header.

The Mariners reasserted their twogoal advantage when Vose and Bogle exchanged passes, before the former smashed past Jamie Jones from 30 yards.

Less than 60 seconds later Grimsby made the points safe. The game’s outstanding player Bogle latched onto Kayden Jackson’s pass and finished neatly past Jones.

Substitute McAnuff pulled another back but, after Bogle had seen an effort cannon off the crossbar, he was not to be denied his hat-trick, curling in a sublime free-kick.

Grimsby boss Paul Hurst said: “I’m pleased with the result. We created a lot of chances once again and scored five goals, with Omar deservedly getting his hat-trick.

“However, I’m not going to sit here and pretend that it was any better than last week’s performance. We played better last weekend.

“We looked very dangerous when we did get it down and play.”
