RECALLED WINGER UPSET AT ABUSE ON THE NET

- By Chris Bailey

DAVID COTTERILL is convinced he can win over Birmingham City fans after the winger admitted some criticism he has received on social media has overstepped the line.

The 28-year-old made his first start in a fortnight during the Blues’ 2-2 draw with Preston North End last week, and he was greeted by jeers from a section of the Birmingham support.

Though he is willing to take most of the flak fired his way on the chin, Cotterill says some of the messages he receives land a little too close to home.

“There were a few jeers from the crowd a few times, on my back a little bit – but that happens.

“You just have to fight back and show why you are in the side,” said the Wales international.

“Of course you are aware of it. Most players are aware of that. It happens. Everyone is voicing their opinion, which is fine.

“The only thing I don’t like is that you are there to be shot at on social media, where everyone can voice their opinions.

“But I just don’t like it when my children are on that picture and they say it on the picture of my children.

“It happens. All you can do is work your socks off, which I am doing to make sure I can get back into the side to help us push for a top-six spot.”

But the man he needs to impress most, Blues boss Gary Rowett, believes Cotterill grabbed his first-team chance with both hands.

“I thought he was excellent, really, really good,” said Rowett.

“In the first half he crossed two or three with his left foot and showed his versatility – and ability – off both feet when he cuts in and shoots.

“When we first came here he scored quite a few goals cutting in and shooting.”
