Vigouroux on spot to rescue the Robins

- By Ben Cole

NEAL ARDLEY felt as though it was two points dropped as his AFC Wimbledon were held at Kingsmeadow by struggling Swindon.

This was a game of few chances but the home side had the best of the lot in the first half when Tom Elliott won a contentious penalty.

However, Lyle Taylor’s low effort was brilliantly saved by Lawrence Vigouroux and neither side in truth came close to finding a winner.

“It was a tough game,” said Ardley, whose side headed into this game having won three times in eight days.

“If you are aggressive with a team that plays like Swindon they can pick you off. Unfortunately, we didn’t make the most of things when we had the ball. We didn’t cross and test the goalkeeper enough.

“It looked like a penalty from where I was because of the way Tom went down but I haven’t seen the incident so others probably had a better view than me.

“We were disappointed we didn’t score the penalty. If you score that then you can go onto win the game comfortably. But we have to move on.”

This game came to life on the half-hour mark when Swindon centre-back Conor Thomas was adjudged to have tripped Elliott in the box, despite visiting protests that he had dived.

Yaser Kasim was booked for his protestations but Swindon felt that justice was done as Vigouroux brilliantly saved Taylor’s low spot-kick.

In a quiet second half the best chance fell to Thomas, however he could only poke the ball wide after Wimbledon failed to deal with a free-kick.

Swindon have now not won in four league games and boss Luke Williams knows his side must start turning draws into victories as they teeter just above the drop zone.

“It’s simple, it’s not a penalty,” said Williams. “The player apologised to Conor Thomas which is gracious of him. But we had Lawrence to step up at the crucial moment.

“I think the only thing that was missing here was a final pass and a final finish.

“We’ve got five points from our last three away games which I don’t think is a terrible return overall.

“We’ve had Nathan Delfouneso higher up the pitch and dominated games but again we haven’t been able to make these dominant performances match winning.

“We can pass and create chances but we haven’t won enough.”
