ADAM’S WORLDIE

Barnsley striker’s curler earns plaudits from TV pundit

- By John Lyons

ADAM Armstrong’s debut stunner for Barnsley against Preston has been named the Sky Bet EFL Goal of the Month for September – and it’s being hailed as ‘out of this world’ by one TV expert.

A fantastic improvised piece of skill left Preston defender Alex Baptiste for dead before Armstrong, on loan from Newcastle, finished with a curling effort into the far corner to seal a 2-1 win.

Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman said: “You couldn’t see a better debut goal anywhere in the world than Adam Armstrong’s. “The skill involved is out of this world and, had it been Messi or Ronaldo, this goal would be global already!” Armstrong added: “To win the award represents a big moment in my career so far, so thanks to all the fans who voted for my goal. It means a lot and, hopefully, it's one of many more to come this season!” The 19year-old received 44 per cent of the public to beat off competition from Blackburn’s Danny Graham and QPR’s Tjaronn Chery.

AFC Wimbledon striker Dom Poleon won the League One accolade for his superb leveller in the 2-1 derby victory at Charlton.

Superb

“I saw there were two defenders and I managed to do a bit of happy feet to get through the middle before toe-poking the ball underneath the keeper,” said the 23-year-old.

Poleon (left) earned 41 per cent of the vote, holding off Peterborough’s Marcus Maddison and Bristol Rovers’ Matty Taylor. Accrington Stanley’s Paddy Lacey (below) claimed the League Two prize for his match-winner against Portsmouth – though he may well have trouble keeping hold of the trophy! Lacey struck a superb 25-yarder into the top corner after bringing down a loose ball in midfield. “I think my Ma will take this off me and put it on the manvote telpiece!” said the 23-year-old midfielder. “I don’t think I’ll be keeping it. It’ll be there forever to remind me of my (full) League Two debut.

“I’m made up to have won. There were two other great goals from teams with big fan bases in Portsmouth and Blackpool. To all the Stanley fans that voted – ta very much!”

With 46 per cent of the vote, Lacey overcame Pompey’s Gary Roberts and the Seasiders’ Colin Daniel.

The winners were chosen after a fan poll on skysports.com.
