The Football League Paper

BIGNOT TYPICAL OF THE TALENT BELOW

-

A WHILE ago, I was asked to name two National League managers who deserve a chance in the EFL.

One was Lincoln’s Danny Cowley and the other Marcus Bignot, of Solihull Moors, so I’m really pleased to see Marcus offered the Grimsby job this week.

Since taking charge at Solihull in 2011, he has made that club really stable. They also play some very attractive football and, last year, won the National North title. With the calibre of sides in that division, it’s a hell of an achievement.

I’ve met him only once, but he spoke very well. His knowledge of the game is good and he’s got a great career behind him at places like Crewe and QPR.

From speaking to the players, his man management is excellent. They all enjoy training.

Another thing people often overlook about Marcus is the work he did with Birmingham City Ladies, revamping the club from top to bottom and laying the foundations for what is now a successful WSL side.

He’s a quality coach who knows the Non-League market. When you consider the type of player Grimsby can afford, that could be very useful.

It’s easy for clubs to go for the same old managers, who haven’t been successful for years but still get jobs based on reputation.

But you only have to see what Darrell Clarke is doing at Bristol Rovers to realise there are plenty of hungry young managers in the National League.
