From bad to worse for poor Spireites

- By Michael Hale

NOTHING is going right for Chesterfield at the moment both on and off the football pitch.

Two months ago they ended Northampton’s eight-month unbeaten run, but they haven’t won in the league since that day.

Outgoing chairman Dave Allen was already joined by four resigning directors before the visit to Fleetwood, and the injury-ridden Spireites now sit bottom of league one, seven points from safety.

“I thought it was a very good performance. Both teams were offensive and going for the game,” said Chesterfield manager Danny Wilson.

“We have a team on the treatment table plus two good subs. It’s a fact you can’t shy away from. If we had those players on the pitch then we might not be in the position we are now.

“When there’s uncertainty at the club like there is at this moment in time, it does affect people. There’s one or two things that still need to be rectified that I’m not aware of but what will be done will be in the best interests of the club.”

Amari’i Bell nearly put Fleetwood ahead early on but his closerange effort was bravely stopped by Lloyd Allinson.

Kristian Dennis shot wide after Jay O’Shea brilliantly played him in, before O’Shea blazed over the gaping net from six yards.

Chesterfield rued that glaring miss almost instantly as Bell smashed in David Ball’s pull back from close range.

Gboly Ariyibi’s cross fell onto the crossbar in the second half but substitute Victor Nirennold slid in Hunter’s cross to double the lead.

The deficit was halved instantly however, O’Shea making no mistake from the spot after Reece Mitchell was brought down.

Chances went begging for debutant Jake Beesley, O’Shea and Ariyibi before Liam O’Neil hit the crossbar late on as Chesterfield were consigned to their eighth consecutive league defeat.

“I have to praise my players. We played a different shape and they grasped it straight away. The happiness in the way they played, the freedom they played with and they pushed themselves,” said Fleetwood boss Uwe Rosler, who saw his side climb to tenth with the victory.

“I’m delighted for the players now as we are getting that winning feeling again and that tastes very good.

“It makes everything easier going into Tuesday.

“We had some big players missing and a lot of people didn’t give us a chance but my players showed what they’re made of.”
