ARGYLE’S RUN IS AT AN END

- By Matt Bamsey

PLYMOUTH boss Derek Adams has urged his league leaders to embark on another winning run as they suffered their first league defeat since the middle of August.

Danny Collins headed Grimsby in front before Omar Bogle hit a second-half double to end the Pilgrims’ 14-game unbeaten sequence.

The defeat saw Plymouth’s lead at the top cut to four points and moved Grimsby up to sixth in the table.

But Adams has called on his side to produce a positive reaction when they face Barnet at Home Park on Tuesday.

He said: “In the end I thought Grimsby deserved to win the match. They played well but we didn’t have that spark that we have had in recent weeks.

“We have had really good opportunities in the game. We should have scored.

“The goals we conceded are very poor goals from our point of view and they were preventable.

“It’s always the same – it’s a very tough league and you can see how tight it is from top to bottom.

“We have been on a very good run and we will now have to go on another good run to keep the momentum going.”

Plymouth had the first chance when Craig Tanner broke into the box, brushed off challenges by Zak Mills and Josh Gowling before firing into the side netting from an acute angle.

And when Jordan Slew tricked his way to the by-line, his cross looked destined to be tapped home by Arnold Garita before keeper James McKeown flicked out a leg.

It would prove decisive as Grimsby swept up the other end and took the lead. James Berrett floated an inviting cross to the back post where Collins rose above Slew to head home.

Grimsby opened a two-goal cushion after Danny Andrew’s free-kick was nodded back into the six-yard box by Collins for Bogle to head home.

Carey twice forced McKeown into smart saves before the Mariners keeper denied substitute Louis Rooney.

Grimsby poured salt into Argyle wounds after Tom Bolarinwa was brought down by McCormick but the ball ran for Bogle who crashed home.

Mariners boss Marcus Bignot says there is more to come from Bogle, who caught the eye of the likes of Nottingham Forest and Wigan Athletic.

He said: “Omar is a work in progress. He can keep on improving.

“He knows I will keep pushing him, we will not stop and be satisfied with what he has achieved so far.

“We want him to be even better. We have always dealt with that speculation so for me it is nothing new.

“He knows I have got his best interests at heart and the January window is not a problem.

“The key to this result was our preparation and organisation.

“Even at 3-0 the players still had that desire to keep a clean sheet and that will stand them in good stead moving forward.”
