FERGIE FRETTING AT LOST POINTS
DONCASTER ROVERS manager Darren Ferguson insisted he will never be happy with only picking up one point at home despite holding League One leaders Peterborough United to a goalless draw.
The Posh had come into the game with a 100 per cent record and the most potent attack in the third tier, but Rovers kept them quiet for the vast majority of the game.
It was Doncaster’s third successive home league draw, while they are still waiting for their first win over Posh since 2011 – when Ferguson was at the London Road helm.
Despite blunting a previously free-scoring Posh, Ferguson said he is desperate to pick up three points at home.
“I’m always disappointed when we don’t win at home,” he said. “That’s the third game now. We need to find a way to turn these draws into wins. We certainly don’t want a feeling of satisfaction with drawing at home, regardless of who we’re playing.
“There were plenty of positives against a good team but we’ve had three games at home and we’ve dropped six points.
“The key to this league is being consistent. Peterborough have been the most consistent up until now. If we get that then we’re more than a match for anyone in this league.”
Doncaster forward John Marquis couldn’t capitalise on an early Jack Baldwin error as his tame shot was comfortably saved.
Marcus Maddison nearly put the visitors ahead in spectacular fashion but his curling effort from 25 yards crashed against the crossbar. Then, Ian Lawlor was equal to Gwion Edwards’ piledriver.
Alfie May raced in behind the Posh defence early in a drab second half but delayed in taking a shot and the chance vanished.
A defiant run from Ben Whiteman almost saw substitute Andy Williams net a winner with 15 minutes remaining but a combination of goalkeeper and defender cleared the danger.
Baldwin then had the vocal travelling support on their feet as he met a corner but his header fell into the grateful arms of Lawlor, and Posh boss Grant McCann admitted he was happy to share the points.
“It was a proper League One competitive game,” said McCann. “We probably cancelled each other out a little bit. I thought we had the better chances in the game, particularly in the first half.
“We’ve got to be happy with a point away from home. We’re still unbeaten and we look forward to next week.
“We showed a different side to ourselves today, how resolute we are. Defensively, we were top class. “We were coming to a good team that is very strong at home and has been over the last year.”
