Chairboys are on Eze street as run ends
GARETH Ainsworth might well have enjoyed a celebratory tipple on Saturday evening.
The Wycombe boss was left toasting both the Chairboys’ firstever Football League win over Yeovil Town at Adams Park, and a victory that lifted them up to fifth in the table.
Since the Glovers joined Wanderers in winning promotion from the non-league ranks in 2003, they’d enjoyed an undefeated run on their home turf.
But first half goals from Eberechi Eze and Joe Jacobson brought that run to an end as Francois Zoko’s seventh goal of the season proved to be little consolation.
Ainsworth said: “They do seem to have had a jinx on us here the last few years so it’s great to finally get the win.
“I’m delighted with the victory. It was thoroughly deserved and lifts us up to fifth position which is a great place to be at this stage of the season.
“We’ve got two cup games coming up now so we’ll stay in that fifth place for a couple of weeks as well which pleases me. I’m really pleased with where we are at the moment and we’ve got key players to come back from injury as well which excites me for the second half of the season.”
Yeovil have now lost eight of their ten away games in League Two this season, the worst record in the division.
Boss Darren Way said: “We’re disappointed with the goals that we’ve conceded and with the way we allowed Wycombe to take control of the game in the first half.
“We made individual errors leading up to both goals but overall it’s a big improvement on our last away game (4-0 defeat at Carlisle).
“We came here to take the game to Wycombe but sadly a lapse of concentration from a couple of players has cost us. “Our away record isn’t very good but we will keep working and we have made progress.”
After seeing two long-range shots saved by Yeovil keeper Artur Krysiak, Eze made it third time lucky on 37 minutes, hammering a powerful low shot into the corner after the visitors failed to clear Dayle Southwell’s cross.
And Jacobson doubled the lead from the penalty spot after Tom James had tripped Paris Cowan-Hall.
But seconds later the Glovers grabbed a lifeline as Zoko pulled a goal back, blasting into the roof of the net from Jordan Green’s cross.
After the break both Green and Zoko missed clear chances to equalise, but it was Wycombe who came closest to a further goal, with Bayo Akinfenwa hitting the crossbar.
