CAIRNEY AWARE MAGPIES MIGHT COME CALLING
TOM Cairney says he is flattered by rumours that Newcastle are looking to reignite their efforts to sign him in January.
The Magpies have been interested in the 26-year-old Scotsman for some time and reportedly had a £20m bid for him rejected last January.
He was one of the Championship’s top players in 2016-17, notching 13 goals and 12 assists in all competitions, but this season has been frustrating for Fulham as they sat in 15th place before the weekend.
But Cairney, who has battled a knee injury this term, is happy to be linked with the Tyneside giants, who won the Championship last term.
“It’s a massive accolade that Rafa Benitez wants
me,” the Scotland international told the London Evening Standard.
“It’s a pat on the back to myself, I guess, to know that other managers appreciate what I’m doing.”
Following Benitez’s interest last season, Cairney signed a contract extension with Fulham.
He has reiterated that he is still happy to remain at Craven Cottage.
He said: “I love playing football here. That’s what I want to do.
“I feel a responsibility to Fulham. It’s been great ever since I arrived.
“I enjoy playing football. I really enjoy playing at the Cottage and long may it continue.”
