Born: Glasgow, 1957 (Age 60) Playing Career: A striker, McGhee started his career with part-timers Greenock Morton in 1975, scoring 37 goals in 64 games before a move to First Division Newcastle in 1977. Barely used, he joined Aberdeen for £70,000 in 1979. In five years at Pittodrie, McGhee scored 63 goals in 164 games, winning the Scottish title, three Scottish Cups and the European Cup Winners’ Cup. He also won the SFA Player of the Year award and the first of four caps for Scotland. Signed by Hamburg for £300,000 in 1984, McGhee struggled with injury and returned to Scotland, where he won a second SPL title with Celtic. After 27 goals in 88 games for the Bhoys, he returned to Newcastle (then in the second tier) in 1989. In two years at St James’ Park, he scored 24 goals in 67 games. Managerial career: Named player-manager of Reading in 1991, McGhee made a further 45 appearances before retiring in 1993. That season, the Royals won the Division Two title. With Reading lying second in Division One, McGhee joined Leicester in December 1994 but was relegated six months later. He then moved to Wolves, twice losing in the Division One play-offs before being sacked in 1998. A move to Millwall in 2000 yielded another Division Two title and yet more play-off heartbreak. McGhee joined Brighton in 2003, finally tasting play-off success with promotion to the second tier in his first season. After leaving the Withdean in 2006, McGhee enjoyed a successful two-year stint at Motherwell, leading the club into the 200809 UEFA Cup. After brief spells at Aberdeen, Bristol Rovers and a return to Motherwell, McGhee spent time as assistant to Scotland boss Gordon Strachan before joining Barnet in November 2017.
