Lucketti rages at Shakers softness

- By Mark Williams

CHRIS Lucketti has challenged struggling Bury to shift their ‘soft and slack’ mentality quickly if they are to avoid the drop, while Posh boss Grant McCann still wants more from his side despite a big win.

The Shakers are still searching for their first victory away from home in the league following a miserable afternoon.

A Danny Lloyd double and Jack Marriott header condemned Lucketti’s outfit to a heavy defeat. The second-half sending off of central defender Eoghan O’Connell also added salt to a gaping injury.

“There's a softness and a slackness going through the club at this moment and it has been there for 12 to 18 months,” said Lucketti. “If you look at our away form you need a certain mentality to win.

“But it's very apparent in the club at the moment that there isn't that ruthlessness to get the points. We have to end that now because there is no hiding place anymore.

“We just weren't ruthless enough in front of goal.”

Meanwhile, McCann wasn’t completely satisfied but thinks Posh silenced the doubters.

He said: “I’m a perfectionist and I want more. It wasn’t the best performance but the most important thing was the three points.

“People say we can't beat the lower teams, well we’ve done it. Bury are a better side than people give them credit for so I’m really pleased we got the win. I was particularly pleased with the way we killed the game after they had a man sent off.”

The writing was on the wall as early as the second minute when Peterborough opened the scoring. Marcus Maddison swung over the corner and an unmarked Lloyd nodded into the net from close range.

The visitors rallied and Jay O’Shea fired inches over the crossbar. Soon after, Danny Mayor forced a fine save from Jonathan Bond.

Bury poured forward after the break and didn’t look like a side rooted to the foot of the division – O’Shea’s strike hitting the post.

The turning point came in the 56th minute when, with Bury on top, two yellow cards in as many minutes saw O’Connell deservedly dismissed.

Posh took full advantage. Winger Maddison injected an ounce of class with a wonderful cross and top scorer Marriott nodded home.

And the three points were sealed on 70 minutes when Lloyd took advantage of a pocket of space 30 yards out before unleashing a sublime hit.
