Addicks exposed by Matty’s late show

- By Stephen Thirkill

FRUSTRATED Charlton boss Karl Robinson has warned his players they risk chucking their season away if they do not become more ruthless.

The Addicks missed the chance to move into the play-off places after Matty Blair’s 94thminute equaliser held them to a 1-1 draw at Doncaster.

The wasteful Londoners blew a number of good second-half chances to make the game safe, just one week after losing to Oxford having led 2-1 after 89 minutes.

“If you don’t take your chances at 1-0, you are punished,” said Robinson. “We were excellent but we have not turned a comfortable position into three points.

“We have to be more ruthless and we spoke about that last week.

“We are miles ahead of where we were last year but we have got to take our chances and find an edge.

“If we do not become ruthless and learn from this, then we are chucking the season away.

“We have already thrown away 10 points in the last two minutes this season.”

But delighted Donny boss Darren Ferguson believes his side’s character shone through.

“The credit must go to my players. We’ve kept going and Matty Blair has popped up at the end,” said Ferguson.

“Tom Anderson’s tackle at 1-0 changed the game. We weren’t great but we kept going and got a bit of luck.

“It wasn’t one of our better performances but we’ve stuck it out and earned something – that shows a lot of character.

“We were very sloppy but we’ve kept going and it’s important to get back to winning ways on Tuesday.”

The visitors hit the front when Patrick Bauer headed home Jake Forster-Caskey’s corner on 18 minutes. Ben Amos saved well from John Marquis shortly after before Josh Magennis headed over from a Charlton corner.

The Addicks nearly doubled their lead when brilliant blocks by Ian Lawlor and Andy Boyle kept out efforts by Tariqe Fosu and Magennis in firsthalf stoppage time.

Lawlor tipped a Fosu shot around the post on 54 minutes and the inform stopper then kept out Ben Reeves with an instinctive save ten minutes later.

A brilliant last-ditch tackle by Tom Anderson denied Fosu on 77 minutes before Boyle cleared a goalbound Reeves cross off the line.

And that dogged defence got its reward four minutes into stoppage time when Blair headed home after Luke McCullough’s initial shot had been blocked.
