DOMINO TIME IN SCRAP TO STAY IN HUNT

-

I’M always up for a managerial merry-go-round, but I didn’t expect one to get going at this late stage of the season!

Grant McCann’s sacking at Peterborough United sparked a crazy week that saw not one, but three promotion-seeking EFL clubs looking for new bosses.

With the club sitting eighth in League One, the dismissal seemed harsh. However, Steve Evans has the promotion experience that may make Posh a good bet for the play-offs.

If the season peters out, I’m sure seeing (owner) Darragh MacAnthony, (director of football) Barry Fry and Steve Evans working in close proximity will give us plenty to talk about!

Evans’ hasty exit from Mansfield meant the Stags moved quickly to prise David Flitcroft away from my old club, Swindon.

With just 11 games remaining and both clubs firmly in the League Two play-off picture, the timing is far from ideal. Mansfield were heavily fancied before a ball was kicked last summer and have put together a tremendous run to leave themselves in contention.

After watching them lose 3-1 at home to Swindon in October, I did not envisage them having the quality to produce what they have.

Swindon, similarly, struggled for consistency before Christmas.

A change of formation and the arrival of the predatory Marc Richards in January has put the Robins firmly in the hunt for a play-off place at least.

With the veteran Matt Taylor in temporary charge, it’ll be interesting to see which way Swindon go. An experienced head alongside Taylor would be my guess in the short term. With Mansfield’s momentum and Swindon’s remaining fixtures looking favourable, you shouldn’t rule either out of an automatic spot just yet.

If it’s to be the play-offs, Mansfield v Swindon at Wembley anyone?
