NO SIGN OF EGO AT DEN INSISTS MORISON

- By Alex Marrow

STEVE Morison believes an equal pay structure and mix of good characters is the driving force behind Millwall’s push for promotion to the Premier League.

A 17-game unbeaten run going into the weekend had lifted the Lions into the play-offs, and Neil Harris’ men are well in the mix, chasing back-to-back promotions and a return to the top flight for the first time since 1990.

The 34-year-old striker says a strong work ethic, manager Harris’ excellent recruitment and a lack of egos in the dressing room are all fostering that winning touch.

Morison said: “Everyone is on the same pay grade and no-one is in a completely different category to anyone else.

“Everyone is together, so you don’t have to worry about egos.

“We keep talking about it, but the spirit in the camp and the relaxed nature we have is really good.

“I think that has come about because the gaffer has put a really good group together – good players who fit in.

“It’s funny but I’m still waiting for that day when someone walks through the dressing room with an ego.

“If that happens, you know the place is going in the wrong direction.”

Millwall won last year’s League One play-offs and are on course for a first topsix finish in the Championship since 2002, some achievement for a club with one of the smallest budgets in the division.

Morison said: “Those people who have tens of millions budgets and are paying people 30, 40 or 50 grand a week are supposed to be in the play-offs.

“They are the teams we are turning over every week because we want it a little bit more than them.

“Every single man in that dressing room needs to succeed, to earn money to be able to continue having a good career.”
