on 25 minutes from a Wigan corner when Ashley Hunter fed Bobby Grant but his left-footed effort was saved by Christian Walton.

But against the run of play on 33 minutes, Power stroked home a delightful finish, picking his spot through a crowded box into the bottom corner.

Four minutes later, Will Grigg played a through-ball which stuck to Massey’s feet and he turned to unleash a right-footed effort into the same corner as Power minutes before.

Latics started the second half as they finished the first, adding a third goal when, following excellent build-up from Power, the ball fell to Burn and he threw his mas- sive left leg at the ball and slotted home.

It was four on 66 minutes when Dunkley smashed home from a few yards out as news of a Bury equaliser at Shrewsbury filtered through to away fans who started to their celebrations.

Town boss John Sheridan, who found out this week he will be replaced by ex-Burnely midfielder Joey Barton this summer, felt his side competed until the first goal.

“It ended up a very hard afternoon for the lads but up to the first goal, I thought were right in the game and I thought we’d really competed,” he said.

“We were competing against the best team in the league but I thought we could’ve taken the lead. The first goal was a killer; Wigan are one of those teams that when they go a goal up, they make life very difficult.

“The first goal was very poor on our behalf. We could’ve kicked the ball out or played it down the line but hopefully we’ll learn from it.

“Our chance of winning the game was if we scored first as it would’ve opened up Wigan but they’re a hard side.”
