HANGOVER? CARRIES ON

-

“They looked a little bit jaded and we were able to capitalise on that.”

Nathan Tyson almost opened the scoring for Wycombe inside three minutes when he got on the end of a long pass and lobbed the ball over the stranded Aaron Chapman only for it to drop just wide.

The hosts then came even closer when Tyson’s cross was met by Paris Cowan-Hall’s diving header, with Chapman brilliantly tipping it on to the post.

But Accrington were handed the lead after 15 minutes when Wycombe goalkeeper Scott Brown was beaten to a long ball by Kayden Jackson, who walked the ball into the empty net.

There was nothing fortunate about the visitors’ second, though, as Stanley’s version of Scott Brown beat his namesake with a brilliant half-volley from just outside the box. Accrington made the result safe in the 66th minute when some good build-up play by Billy Kee and Jackson led to Sean McConville steering the ball home. The sight of right-back Michael Harriman blazing a long-range effort high and wide summed up what was a desperate day for the Chairboys. But it was another memorable one for Accrington, who added a fourth in stoppage time through Offrande Zanzala’s penalty after the substitute had been hauled down by Nathan McGinley. A crumb of consolation for Wycombe is that they have hung on to third place, but they now only lead Exeter by one point with two games left.

Manager Gareth Ainsworth said: “Lady luck is smiling on us because we didn’t deserve any fortune. We didn’t work hard enough.

“The boys are devastated in there, but all I’ll say is Accrington are worthy champions of this league.

“A team hasn’t come here and done that to us all season and that’s why they’re going to be champions. They were outstanding in the way they closed, the way they won the second balls, they defended solidly.

“They were absolutely resilient and we were under-par and that combination has ended with a 4-0 home defeat. Hopefully we can get one or two back for next weekend.”
