It’s Corr blimey as sub Barry strikes...

- By Matthew Gooding

CAMBRIDGE supersub Barry Corr was the match-winner again as the U’s came out on top in a thrilling encounter with Cheltenham Town.

Corr, who has endured an injury-hit three years at the Abbey Stadium, scored twice having come off the bench as the U’s won 2-0 at Stevenage last week. And he was in the right place again here to net the winner eight minutes from time and settle an end-of-season encounter that was anything but moribund.

“Barry’s done that all through his career, and I was really pleased for him,” said Cambridge interim boss Joe Dunne.

“He has another great moment to remember, and I was encouraged by how a lot of the players stepped up in the second half.

“It was a game that had everything, and it was really entertaining for everyone. Your emotions are up and down but at the end it’s another three points and we want to finish the season strongly."

A lightning start saw three goals in the first 13 minutes, with Cheltenham striking first after a flowing move ended with George Lloyd flicking in a Carl Winchester cut-back.

Cambridge were on level terms seven minutes later when Greg Taylor found space to prod in a Jevani Brown corner, but the Robins were celebrating again in the 13th minute when Mohamed Eisa curled home a fine 25-yard freekick.

Referee Brett Huxtable incurred the wrath of the home crowd on the stroke of half-time when he awarded a penalty for a foul on Brown by Jordan Cranston seconds before Billy Waters swept the ball into the net. To compound the home side’s misery, Medy Elito smashed his penalty over the bar.

Seven minutes after the break Maris restored parity with a low shot, before Brown made no mistake from 12 yards after a foul by Cranston on substitute David Amoo.

Eisa pulled his side level again in the 78th minute, but it was left to Corr to win it with a close-range effort after Flinders had parried a shot from Maris.

Cheltenham manager Gary Johnson said: “We’re blooding in a few young lads, and in the first half we looked confident and played some good stuff.

“We scored three decent goals, but the important goal was always going to be the first one after half-time, and whether we could cope with their onslaught. We’ll keep working with the players to take us forward.”
