CHARLIE SO COOL OVER HIS HEROICS

- By Charlie Talbot-Smith

LADY Luck has smiled on Charlie Mulgrew this year – and that is what he credits for such a tremendous goalscoring campaign.

The Scotland international, 32, came into this weekend with 14 goals for the season – an impressive haul for a man who plays mostly at centre-back.

And his goal in midweek against Doncaster confirmed Rovers’ promotion back to the Championship with a 1-0 triumph.

But the former Celtic defender modestly claims fortune has favoured him this season.

“I think I’ve had 15 shots on goal and scored 14,” he said. “Most of them have been penalties, but I’ll take it.

“I’ve been on free-kicks, too, and I’ve had a couple falling to me in the box.”

With promotion now sealed, Mulgrew is confident Tony Mowbray’s side can cope back in the Championship next season.

“I’m sure he will want to strengthen with one or two others and the players will welcome that competition,” he added.

“It’s a big jump. We know the Championship is such a strong league and the teams coming down, with all the money they’ve got, will make it harder still.

“We’re just glad to be going back and hopefully we can enjoy it.”
