Boss Aspin promises big change at Vale

- By Liam Haynes

NEIL Aspin admits he has major work on his hands at Port Vale this summer.

Aspin watched his Vale side take the lead against Carlisle through debutant Dior Angus.

But Ashley Nadesan and Hallam Hope struck after the break to give the Cumbrians the win, and to compound matters, Anthony Kay was sent off late on for the hosts.

Aspin may have saved his side from the drop but he admits there will be plenty of upheaval at Vale Park after the season ends next week.

“The last two weeks, we haven’t been good enough and this game was an extension of that,”said Aspin.

“It reiterates all the work we need to do to turn it around

“I’m pleased we're at the end of the season because it's been very disappointing.

“I feel embarrassed as a manager to be signing autographs and getting applause because we need to get a better team out, which is what the fans want to see.

“There's a lot of hard work ahead.

“The season might be ending but for me it's only the beginning.”

Carlisle came from behind to secure victory at Port Vale, in Keith Curle’s penultimate game as manager.

Curle announced earlier this week that he will be stepping down at the end of the season.

After a slow start, Vale debutant Angus tapped in from a couple of yards out on 25 minutes after an initial effort was parried into the air by Carlisle stopper Jack Bonham.

Minutes later, the visitors were indebted to Bonham, who pulled off a top save to keep out Tom Pope’s header.

The hosts were made to pay for that miss after the restart when the Cumbrians drew level through Nadesan. A cross was deflected into his path and he drilled a superb effort into the top corner.

Carlisle then sprang in front on 70 minutes when sub Hope - who only came on four minutes earlier - fired home Jamie Devitt's cross. To compound the hosts' misery, Kay was sent off late on for violent conduct.

“It was important we went out and put a performance on,” said Curle.

“The victory was well-earned and we certainly deserved it from the second half showing.

“There’s a lot of emotions and distractions that went on in the week, obviously after what has happened.

“That’s diluted some of the potential whispers but it was important everyone was made aware of what was happening.”
