LEAGUE TWO ACES MAY MAKE STEP UP...

-

I’VE been very impressed with a number of strikers playing in League Two this season.

In fact, the shortlist for Player of the Season consisted of three front men. Wycombe’s Adebayo Akinfenwa, Cheltenham’s Mohamed Eisa and the eventual winner, Billy Kee, have all had stellar campaigns.

A quick glance across the scoring charts shows you the bottom division has a plethora of sharpshooters. Before yesterday’s games, seven had plundered 18 league goals or more.

There’s a mix of youthful and experienced players on that list and it will be interesting to see where some of them are playing their football next season.

Eisa, for example, is a player attracting a lot of attention from clubs higher up the ladder. Speaking recently, his manager Gary Johnson suggested he’s already capable of jumping two divisions into the Championship.

It’s hard to argue with him. Twenty-two league goals in his maiden EFL season means his stay at Whaddon Road is likely to be a short one.

Another player making headlines in the West Country is Forest Green’s No.9 Christian Doidge. A double against Chesterfield last weekend all but confirmed his club’s survival.

After his heroics in the National League last season, a lot of Forest Green’s hopes have rested on his shoulders. The January arrival of Reuben Reid has helped ease the burden, but Doidge’s continuing influence makes me believe he will soon get a chance higher up.

Exeter’s Jayden Stockley and Coventry’s Mark McNulty are two more drawing admiring glances and a lot could be determined by what happens in the remaining weeks of the season. Should Exeter or Coventry be promoted, the guarantee of League One football should make it easier to hold on to their prized assets.

It’s hard to envisage either Wycombe or Accrington beginning next season without their talismanic front men. Akinfenwa continues to be the main man at Adams Park. Seventeen goals and 12 assists is an incredible contribution and one that could still see Wycombe going up automatically.

Accrington are already celebrating and Kee is on course to be the division’s leading marksman. His goal at Newport on Tuesday moved him on to 25 and it’s now going to be almost impossible for the chasing pack to catch him. Boss John Coleman has got the absolute best out of Kee. Their partnership will be vital if Stanley are to flourish next season.
