HEROES COULD INSPIRE CURRENT GENERATION

-

I WAS back at my old club Swindon Town last week to celebrate the 25-year anniversary of their 1993 promotion to the Premier League. It was a night of nostalgia, a chance for supporters and players to relive the famous 4-3 playoff final victory over Leicester City. Listening to the likes of Glenn Hoddle, Paul Bodin and Shaun Taylor was very inspiring and left me wondering if managers are missing a trick by not educating current players enough about their clubs’ former glories. Through my media work, I’ve been fortunate enough to meet a number of legends in recent years. I can’t remember it happening too much when I was playing and I certainly think it would have had a positive effect on me. All players want to be revered in years to come. The motivation won’t always come from within. In an era when players and supporters can sometimes appear detached, a history lesson at the start of each season might just make that gap a little bit tighter.
