Boss Lowe delighted at superb Shakers

- By Jon Waldron

BURY boss Ryan Lowe was full of praise for his side after they claimed a gutsy win at Colchester.

Byron Moore rifled the Shakers ahead 10 minutes before halftime from close range after Nicky Adams had latched onto Jay O’Shea’s pass and found him.

And Bury doubled their lead seven minutes after halftime through Chris Dagnall, who planted a left-foot shot inside the far post after being afforded space by the home defence.

Colchester pulled a goal back with eight minutes remaining through Luke Norris, who converted from the spot after being fouled by Chris Stokes in the area, but Bury held out.

Lowe said: “We set out to get in their faces early doors and to go about them the way we wanted.

“The lads were very focused and I can’t praise the lads enough.

“With every individual I put in there, I want an individual performance and a team performance and I think I got both.

“I thought we were excellent. They’re a good team and there’ll not be many teams who will come here and do that.”

It was a difficult day for Colchester, who lost centre-back duo Frankie Kent and Tom Eastman to firsthalf injuries.

Colchester also went close in the first half when keeper Joe Murphy denied Courtney Senior and Harry Pell’s 25-yard effort flashed over.

Dillon Barnes denied O’Shea before Colchester received a lifeline when Norris blasted in from the spot.

U’s boss John McGreal said: “We’ve lost two centre-halves – it’s tough, but you have to commend the players for playing out of position, particularly in the second half.

“We threw everything at the players in the second half and I thought we put in a gritty, determined display. “We haven’t got the result but even at 2-0, the game could have gone away from us quite easily.

“But we dug in, got a goal and very nearly got an equaliser.

“The players did it to the best of their ability and we nearly came away with a draw.

“When things go against you, a lot of teams feel sorry for themselves.

“But I think they should be proud of what they did and I think the fans appreciated it.”
