SHREWS CAN RISE UP TABLE – LUKE

- By Jimmy Brooker

DEFENDER Luke Waterfall insists a winning run is within Shrewsbury’s fingertips.

The Shropshire outfit have stuttered in the early stages of the season and only registered their first triumph of the new campaign two weeks ago, a 2-0 win over Southend.

But more solid displays in recent weeks have halted a run of losses and given an injection of steel to John Askey’s side.

And, Waterfall maintains, once the victories start coming, the Shrews will start shooting up the League One standings.

“We know in there that we’re not far away,” said 28-year-old Waterfall, signed in the summer from Lincoln.

“We’ll definitely start to put it right. We just need to start getting on the right side of it.

“We’re all man enough in there – we talk it out and get the frustration out – and we’ll all get it right.

“It is still early days. You win two or three games on the bounce and suddenly you’re looking upwards, towards the play-offs and stuff, rather than downwards.

“That’s what we plan on doing.”

Despite being nearer the foot of the table, Shrewsbury have not been on the end of a plethora of heavy defeats, with Sheffield-born Waterfall noting the Shrews have a number of plus points to take from the opening weeks of the campaign.

“You always look at the positives – there’s always positives to take from games,” said Waterfall. “We were just not reacting.

“That’s the main thing; our reactions have got to be better. We’ll improve on that. We’ll learn and hopefully put it right.

“We haven’t come away from any game thinking we’ve been battered.

“Even when we’ve lost, it’s been by the odd goal.

“We know we’ve got the players to turn it around, to start putting the chances away.”
