PORTSMOUTH made further progress along the road back towards the Championship – and it’s on the road where they seem to be at their most potent.

Success at Scunthorpe means Pompey have now taken 26 points from a possible 30 away from Fratton Park – a record no other side in the top four divisions can match.

Kenny Jackett – twice a promotion winner at this level – has gradually assembled a side with both talented attacking options and a robustness and strength which allows them to grind out positive results.

Just as this contest typified why Pompey have become a force to be reckoned with again, it also highlighted why Scunthorpe – months on from finishing in the playoffs – have found the going much tougher.

As long as they remain so porous, it’s hard to see them being able to achieve more than survival.
