Arquin to rescue with last-gasp spectacular

- By Tom Seymour

A SPECTACULAR volley from Yoann Arquin rescued a point for Yeovil after a hectic finale in their match against Northampton.

Arquin’s 40-yard effort came just a minute after substitute Andy Williams looked to have grabbed the winner when he was played in behind and slotted past Stuart Nelson.

And Yeovil manager Darren Way said it was one of the best goals the Huish Park crowd had even seen.

“I’d challenge anyone to think of a better one,” said Way. “We’ve had fantastic players here over the years, but I’ve never seen a goal like that.”

Arquin is out of contract on January 1 but may well have played his way into a new deal after his impact coming off the bench. “We’ve offered him a new deal and we’re speaking to his agent,” Way continued.

Northampton boss Keith Curle thought his team had grabbed all three points, only for those hopes to be dashed just 60 seconds later.

“That’s a finish or strike that would be worthy of gaining a point for any team in any division across the country,” Curle said.

“I know Yoann Arquin because I had him at Notts County and he can do that, but he can also put it in row Z, seat 28. That’s Yoann and that’s why he’s in League Two. If he could do it on a consistent basis he’s got all the attributes and the ability to go and play higher.

“Talking of that, that’s what we need to do and make better, consistent decisions in possession and out of possession. That’s football and that’s why you see lots of players at this level because consistently they don’t do the right things at the right time. That’s why I’m here to improve it.”

Jordan Green should have scored for the Glovers earlier in the game when he was played clear through by Rhys Browne, but allowed David Cornell to rush out and smother his shot.

At the other end Kevin van Veen and Williams broke twoon-one, but when Van Veen needed to pick out his strike partner in space he over-hit the pass and the chance went.

Both Browne and Van Veen had deflected efforts that drifted just wide at either end. Tom James also had Cornell worried with a dipping freekick that went just over.
