CURRIE RELISHES ‘FAMILY’ CUP-TIE

- By Matt Badcock

WHEN Darren Currie walks out of the Bramall Lane tunnel this afternoon, he’ll no doubt look up to see where the family name is enshrined.

The Barnet interim manager’s uncle is no less than former England international Tony Currie – one of Sheffield United’s greatest ever players and who has a stand named after him.

In fact, the whole family will be at the FA Cup third round tie as the National League Bees look to cause an almighty upset and stun the high-flying Championship side.

A little over a week ago, Currie was expecting to be in the Barnet dug-out in his usual role of assistant manager.

But when legendary manager John Still announced his retirement, Currie was handed the chance to make the job he unequivocally wants his own.

“I was obviously excited when the draw came out because of my connections up there with my uncle so I was looking forward to what was going to be a nice trip to Bramall Lane,” Currie told The FLP.

“But as we know in football, things change very quickly, and I find myself leading the team now – which I’m really looking forward to.

“It’s nice we’ve got all my family up there supporting the pair of us. One of us will be slightly more cheesed off than the other come the final whistle, but it is a nice family occasion, there’s no getting away from it.

“It’s a game I’m looking forward to and, listen, it’s FA Cup football, we’ve always got a chance.”

But he knows it’s going to be tough.

“They’re a top Championship side,” he said. “I’ve not heard Tone speak about them so enthusiastically as he has recently and what Chrissy Wilder is doing there.

“But what I want our players to do is go up there, be brave on the ball and express themselves.”
