Nadesan nicks it for fighting Fishermen

- By Matthew Hubbert

ASHLEY Nadesan’s first goal for Fleetwood secured another result on the road for Joey Barton’s side as they put an end to Burton Albion’s sixmatch unbeaten run with a victory at the Pirelli Stadium.

It pushed Town five points clear of their hosts and keeps alive hopes of a late run for the play-offs.

After the match, Barton praised the resilience of his side as they battled to hold on to the points.

“For me, if you are going to be a good side and have a good season you probably need about 12 or 15 of those types of result,” Barton said.

“Credit must go to our lads. We stayed disciplined and we were perhaps a shade unlucky not to win it by more, with Ash Hunter hitting the bar and with a bit more care in the final third on the counter-attack.

“Im really, really pleased with a good team performance and we keep building from there.”

For Burton boss Nigel Clough it was another disappointing result on home turf where his side have not won since Boxing Day, despite having been on a sixgame unbeaten run.

“We keep saying to the players don’t lose these tight games because we have done earlier in the season and we thought we were past that.

“Our endeavour here at the Pirelli has been good all season, but we have not always turned it into results, although our attacking intent has been there from the very first day.

“We had got five points out of nine from three difficult away games prior to this and to throw that away with a home loss – we shouldn’t be losing these types of games. We have been taking steps forward of late and this feels like a step back.”

In a lacklustre game, there was a distinct lack of clear chances as defences dominated.

Albion went closest in a poor first half with Liam Boyce and Lucas Akins both failing to seriously trouble Alex Cairns.

The second half started better, and in the 57th minute Nadesan timed his run to the back post to finish off Paddy Madden’s cross.

Fleetwood almost doubled their advantage soon after, when right-back Lewie Coyle curled a low effort wide of the far post from the edge of the box before substitute Ash Hunter rattled the crossbar in stoppage time.
