Wellens furious at Mariners methods

- By Peter Thompson

SWINDON manager Richie Wellens accused Grimsby of time-wasting after being held to a draw by the 10-man Mariners.

The Robins looked to be heading for all three points when Theo Robinson fired them ahead eight minutes after Ludvig Ohman was sent off.

Luke Hendrie’s header salvaged a point for Grimby 14 minutes from time.

Wellens said: “I think all in all it was a solid performance.

“We should be 2-0 up within the first 10 minutes, we started the game really well and then just before half-time they came into it a little bit.

“We were playing against a team that came to defend and put balls in areas to not really play, to win free-kicks and throw-ins and waste a lot of time.

“They were wasting time before they went down to 10 men.

“When we are 1-0 up against 10 men you think you have won the game.

“It doesn’t matter what level, if you switch off anything can happen.”

Visiting boss Michael Jolley praised his side’s bravery.

Jolley said: “We can be pleased because we weren’t at our best.

“In the first half Swindon were the better team, it was only our goalkeeper and their profligacy which prevented them going ahead.

“We were down to 10 and it gets more difficult, but we tried to be as brave as we could with two strikers up there and we got the goal.

“The response to going behind was we probably had more chances in the last 15 minutes in the match with 10 than in the rest of the match with 11.

“We were a threat all the way through.” Kaiyne Woolery had the best first-half chance when he found himself oneon-one with James McKeown, but he opted to try and round the goalkeeper as opposed to shooting, and the opportunity was spurned. Ohman was dismissed for a second yellow card in the 66th minute for barging over Woolery.

Swindon made their numerical advantage tell when Robinson scored for the second game running, tapping in from close range after his initial header was saved by McKeown.

Grimsby levelled immediately from Hendrie’s header following an cross by Elliot Embleton.

Kristian Dennis could have won it for the visitors, but blazed over when sent through on goal.
