VAULKS PROUD TO BAG WALES CALL-UP
WILL Vaulks admits his call-up to the Wales squad made the past week one of the strangest of his career.
The 25-year-old Rotherham midfielder was sent off in last Saturday’s derby against Sheffield United for a reckless lunge at George Baldock, with his side going on to lose the match 2-0.
Vaulks’ mood was improved two days later, though, with a telephone call from national team boss Ryan Giggs.
“It’s been a strange week and it sums up football really,” the Wirral-born player, who qualifies for Wales through his mother, said.
“You have a massive low – probably the lowest I’ve felt after a game in a long time, if not ever – to then two days later, getting a call-up to your national team for the first time.
“It’s amazing and it’s something I thought had gone for me, but I think with hard work and continuing to try and play as well as I can, eventually people notice.
“I got a phone call from the manager, Ryan Giggs, saying that he wanted to give me the heads-up before he announced it that he was going to include me in the squad.
“For a manager that has done so well in the game and played at the top level to think you’re a half-decent player and think you might add to his squad is extra kudos.
“My mum is very proud, as is my dad I suppose!”
