SUPER SAM GRABS TOP GOAL HONOUR

- By Tom Blackett

NORTHAMPTON striker Sam Hoskins’ second goal against Tranmere was unconventional – and now it’s won him an

award! The 26-year-old netted twice in the Cobblers’ 2-1 win at Prenton Park in early February and it was the second of those strikes that has earned him the Sky Bet League Two Goal of the Month trophy. Hoskins defied all logic as he backheeled home a half-volley to leave Tranmere keeper Scott Davies helpless.

“It was a good cross from David Buchanan,” said Hoskins. “I didn’t have the time or space to take a touch and control the ball so it was about helping it on and aiming for the far post as much as anything. It came off perfectly.

“I’m delighted to have won the award, and hopefully we can keep our good form going in to the final nine games of the season.”

Hoskins earned 46 per cent of the public vote, enough to beat Swindon’s Kaiyne Woolery and Stevenage’s Ilias Chair.

Delighted

In the Championship, Brentford winger Said Benrahma claimed the honours, receiving 56 per cent of the vote.

The 23-year-old Algerian shimmied through a mesmerised Hull defence before lifting a shot into the net with the toe of his boot. It was just one of his three goals as the Bees thrashed the Tigers 5-1.

“I just picked the ball up and went,” he said. “I kept on dribbling and then managed to score. It gave me great pleasure to score a goal like that.”

Benrahma beat off competition from Reading’s Nelson Oliveira and Norwich’s Teemu Pukki.

Oxford’s Jordan Graham scooped the League One accolade for his stunning free-kick in the 1-0 victory at Blackpool. It was his first EFL goal in more than three years.

The 24-year-old, on loan from Wolves, said: “It’s great to win the award. I struck it fairly well but, more importantly, it helped us get a big win, our first away win this season.”

With 48 per cent, Graham held off Barnsley’s Alex Mowatt and Scunthorpe’s Kyle Wootton.
