BUTLAND IS BEST KEEPER, INSISTS JONES
STOKE manager Nathan Jones hailed Jack Butland as one of the country’s top goalkeepers following his recent call-up to the England squad.
Butland is the only Championship player named in Southgate’s squad, having remained at the bet365 Stadium following Stoke’s relegation from the Premier League last season.
And the 26-year-old has impressed Jones since the former Luton boss took over in January.
After the Potters’ goalless draw with Derby on Wednesday, Jones said: “For me, there is no better keeper in England. I see him every day and I don’t want to be disrespectful to anyone, but Jack is outstanding.
“The way he goes about his work – he’s a tireless worker – and when called upon he’s been brilliant.
“We’ve kept three clean sheets on the trot and that’s been a team effort but Jack has obviously played his part tonight.”
Jones believes the division Butland plays in should not be a barrier when it comes to international selection.
He added: “If you are good enough you get picked (for England) and Jack is good enough, regardless of where he plays. He showed a real commitment to stay at the club and we are delighted to have him.
“I know Gareth (Southgate) very well and he picks the best players and Jack is 100 per cent in the best three keepers in England.”
