Robinson in seventh heaven over win

- By Matt Lenny

OXFORD manager Karl Robinson watched his side make it seven games unbeaten in the league and said: “We were excellent.”

The victory at Rotherham came thanks to goals from Tarique Fosu and Matty Taylor, and moves Oxford into the play-offs.

Robinson said: “We were excellent and it could have been more. We could have put the game to bed well and truly. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case.

“I am really proud of my team.

“This is a very difficult place to come and play. It’s like the Alamo. It doesn’t matter how much control you have over the game, you know it’s only one slip up or error and you know where the football’s going to go.

“We are not where we should be yet but I think that’s a massive step in the direction I expect.”

Oxford’s opener came out of nothing. Tarique Fosu collected the ball on the edge of the box and drove a powerful shot beyond the reach of Daniel Iversen.

Rotherham’s response saw them have a penalty appeal turned down when Chris Cadden’s block from Jake Hastie’s goal-bound effort struck an arm.

The Millers levelled when Michael Ihiekwe finished off a move which he started from central defence.

The defender’s marauding run resulted in a cross from Michael Smith and Ihiekwe was in position to bravely nod past Simon Eastwood.

Oxford retook the lead when Fosu expertly found Matty Taylor, who guided his header beyond Iversen.

The visitors had opportunities to stretch their advantage with John Mousinho’s effort deflecting just over and Fosu striking a post.

Rotherham manager Paul Warne feels Oxford will be challenging for promotion.

He said: “It was two very good teams.

“The first half was quite equal. I honestly thought in the second half we would go out and win, but they kept their attacks going better than we did. In the final third the cross or the set-piece wasn’t right.

“I just didn’t feel like we were fluent with the ball.

“Overall I am disappointed that we lost, but we have gone down to a very good team. Full respect to Karl, his team were excellent.

“They just had a little bit more than we did in the final third.”
