Boo-boys vent fury as Jackett slips again

- By Steve Coombs

KENNY Jackett admitted he is feeling the heat after his side went down to Wimbledon.

Jackett’s side enjoyed 62 per cent of the possession at Kingsmeadow and hit the crossbar through defender Christian Burgess, but could not find a way through.

Dons defender Terell Thomas made a frustrating afternoon even worse for the visitors when headed home the winner in stoppage time to send the Pompey boss back to the south coast empty-handed.

“The crowd are frustrated with me and I can hear that,” said Jackett.

“There is nobody that feels that more than the manager because it is a very privileged position being a football manager and Portsmouth is a fantastic club.

“It was very disappointing because it was a game that we had the lion’s share of.

“We could not quite make it happen in their box and in the final third and got downed by a sucker-punch at the end.

“I am experienced enough to know Tuesday night is the key and to build on a lot of good things we have and to turn it around.

“We need to find the edge and keep encouraging the players at the right time.”

The visitors had the better of the first half and John Marquis should have opened the scoring in the 18th minute.

Marcus Harness’s pass carved open the Wimbledon defence, leaving Marquis oneon-one with keeper Nathan Trott, but the striker pulled his shot wide.

Burgess was inches away from breaking the deadlock nine minutes later when he headed against the crossbar from Lee Brown’s cross, while Tom Naylor also spurned a free header as the teams went in goalless at half-time.

Pompey goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray pulled off a good save to keep out Marcus Forss’s freekick six minutes after the restart.

But the goal that was always coming arrived in stoppage time, and to Wimbledon’s delight, as Thomas fired his header beyond MacGillivray for all three points.

Wimbledon caretaker-manager Glyn Hodges said: “We left it late but this is another great victory for us.

“The players have been magnificent with the attitude that they’ve shown in the last few matches.”
