SMITH’S GLAD TO BE BACK ON GOAL TRAIL...

- By Ella Jerman

GOOD things come to those who wait – that’s the message from Rotherham striker Michael Smith who is back on-song in front of goal after a long period waiting in the wings.

Smith endured a frustrating start to the campaign, struggling to make an impact from the bench, but came back into the side in the 4-0 victory over Coventry earlier this month and scored twice from the spot while also setting up one of Matt Crooks’ two goals.

The 27-year-old followed that up with another strike in the 2-1 win at Blackpool last weekend and now just wants to continue doing what he does best.

“I’m enjoying my football again and it was hard watching from the sidelines, but it’s great to be back involved and pulling on that shirt on a matchday,” said the striker.

“It’s just nice to be able to walk back out onto the pitch with the lads, but it’s up to me to keep performing now.”

Ahead of this weekend’s action, Rotherham were sitting in 10th having won their last two matches.

Having been part of the team that won promotion from the third tier in 2018, Smith knows it’s not the margin of victory that matters, but rather just getting the points on the board.

“When we were last in League One, it was all about putting little runs together and we’ve managed to do that over the last couple of weeks,” he said.

“Our win over Blackpool perhaps wasn’t the most entertaining game for football enthusiasts, but we dug in to get the win and we’ll have to do that on plenty of occasions.

“There is more than enough ability in the squad and the strength in depth we have is arguably better than it was when we won promotion a couple of years ago. We’ve just got to keep grinding away.”
