BOWEN: I FEEL LIKE I’VE WON THE LOTTERY!
READING fans were surprised when Mark Bowen was appointed as the club’s new manager – and so was he!
The Royals were in the market for a new boss following Jose Gomes’ sacking ten days ago, but most people expected them to look outside for a replacement.
However, Bowen, who had been Reading’s sporting director, was handed the reins last Monday.
“I was stunned to be offered the job as I had started the recruitment myself,” the 55-year-old told BBC Radio Berkshire.
“I got a phone call after the Bristol City game that the decision had been made (to sack Jose Gomes) by the owner and his associates.
“I was then asked to go through the process of drawing up a list of candidates.
“I’d already spoken to two or three, so it hardly rings true as someone who thinks the job’s going to come to me.”
Bowen has agreed a deal as manager until the end of the season.
“I didn’t think about the length of the deal or any promises about spending in January,” said Bowen.
“I didn’t give it much thought other than this is a fantastic opportunity and I feel like I’ve won the lottery.”
The former Norwich and Wales left-back has worked with Mark Hughes at a number of clubs, but is now striking out on his own at a Reading side in the relegation zone heading into the weekend.
“I was enjoying the role as sporting director, but, at the same time, what I consider my forte and what I’ve been good at over the last 20 years has been coaching players, educating players, getting the best out of players, problem solving and preparing teams to go and win football matches,” he added.
His first match in charge was yesterday’s game against high-flying Preston North End at the Madejski Stadium.
