‘STABLE’ WIGAN IS PERFECT CLUB FOR WILLIAMS

- By Matthew Dale

JOE Williams is enjoying the “stability” afforded by Wigan following the turmoil he experienced on loan at Bolton last season.

The 22-year-old midfielder was allowed to leave Everton on a free transfer this summer and is pleased he chose the Latics for his “new longer-term challenge”.

Williams said: “It was difficult for me last season because we had times at Bolton Wanderers when we couldn’t train every day because of the ongoing circumstances.

“It was a really tough year, but it was all experience that puts me in a better position as a person and as a player.

“It helped me to gain that experience in fighting adversity and everything that comes with being in a position like that.

“With Wigan Athletic, I’m at a club where I feel stable. All of the lads are well looked after by all of the staff, so it’s really settling to know everyone is pulling in the same direction.”

Williams feels he has learned from his sending-off against Leeds earlier this season on what he described as an “emotionally-charged home debut”.

He added: “A moment like a sending-off gives you perspective on different situations within games.

“If I’m on a yellow card, like I was, I know what the line is. You can’t overstep the line because if you do, you’re off and you let your team-mates and the supporters down.

“It’s the little learning curves you go through which you probably don’t realise immediately that help you out the most.”
