JONSON: WE HAVE GOT THE QUALITY TO SHINE

- By Jacob Newbury

JONSON Clarke-Harris believes the “penny has dropped” after Bristol Rovers notched just their second league win in 16 games when his double saw them beat Sunderland 2-0 in midweek.

After the centreforward helped his side avoid relegation last season, his tally of 13 goals in this campaign has seen Rovers hold a mid-table position.

But the 25-year-old admits he is disappointed in the Gas’ recent form, indicating that the side are failing to transfer their good work on the training ground into games.

“We are still disappointed in ourselves because it has taken so long to actually play like that,” Clarke-Harris said.

“I think it’s gone past that point now of being nice to each so we are all on each other every day in training now. The penny’s dropped.

“We’re all buzzing for the gaffer (Ben Garner) because the training is good, everything’s good. It’s just we’re not taking it into the Saturday or Tuesday games.

“I just hope now the penny’s dropped and we can actually crack on and see the season out well.”

Tuesday’s success over Sunderland was only boss Garner’s second win since he arrived at the Memorial Ground in December, but Clarke-Harris insists the current regime is different compared to his predecessor Graham Coughlan’s tenure.

He added: “The standard has gone up so much and the most frustrating thing is, we’ve been so good in training then it comes to a Saturday or a Tuesday and it’s been nothing what we’ve worked on.

“In the Sunderland game we actually showed that whatever the gaffer is putting into place it’s absolutely working.

“It’s been a long time coming to put on a right shift and a right performance in front of the fans.”
