BROWN BIDS TO GET THE U’S ON THE RISE

- By John Lyons

WAYNE Brown is ‘excited’ by his chance to get Colchester United heading in the right direction again after taking charge on an interim basis.

The U’s sacked Steve Ball after Tuesday’s 2-1 home defeat against Exeter. That made it 13 League Two games without a win and left them 21st in the table.

Now chairman Robbie Cowling has turned to former Colchester defender Brown to turn things around. The 43-year-old was already an employee of the club and integral to a partnership with Non-League Maldon & Tiptree which has seen him manage the Jammers for the last few years.

However, with Maldon’s Isthmian League season suspended, he has now been given the chance to turn Colchester fortunes around on a temporary basis.

“There are spells in every season when you hit a bit of a sticky patch,”

Brown told The FLP. “The only way to get out of it is to keep working hard as a collective group and stick together. If you do that, the results will turn.

“We haven’t been blown away by any team, it’s been the odd goal, so no-one is pressing the panic button. We have a lot of quality in the group and I’m excited to try to get the best out of them.

“I want to try to restore the lads’ belief. Confidence is a massive thing in football and other industries.”

Cowling has asked Brown to take charge only for ‘the next run of games’, but also stressed he isn’t looking for other applicants.

Brown added: “I have a great relationship with Robbie, but I know football is a results-driven business.

“If I get some results, I have the best chance to extend this position. If I don’t the club will bring someone else in.”
