Romp lifts Dons from drop zone

- By Harry Jones

AFC WIMBLEDON moved out of the relegation places with their biggest win of the season.

But head coach Mark Robinson insisted he would not get carried away with the result.

He said: “It’s a massive win for us and I want the players and fans to enjoy it and it should give the players confidence.

“For me and the staff, though, it’s only three points and we are already looking at the next game against Ipswich.

“I am happy, but I am not on cloud nine. I have got to keep levelheaded and we have got to now put in performance like that on Tuesday.”

It was Accrington who took the lead after five minutes when a Sean McConville corner was flicked goalwards by Cameron Burgess and Michael Nottingham headed home.

Wimbledon equalised after 21 minutes when Luke O’Neill’s corner was punched by keeper Toby Savin, but only to Ollie Palmer who nodded home.

Palmer doubled the tally after 42 minutes when Jack Rudoni headed the ball back across goal and the striker side-footed Wimbledon into the lead.

And in injury-time in the first half, Palmer’s ball to the far post found Ayoub Assal and his looping header made it 3-1 at the break.

Wimbledon extended their lead after 57 minutes thanks to a Joe Pigott 20-yard free-kick which sailed past Savin – his 17th goal of the campaign.

Their fifth came after 64 minutes when a George Dobson header put Assal clean through and he rifled low past Savin to complete a good day for the visitors.

Dons defender Ben Heneghan was sent off in the 92nd minute for two bookable offences, but the game was already won.

Robinson added: “We have talked all week about scoring different types of goals as that has been our problem this season.

“We talked about doing everything with more intent and everyone took the message on board.”

Stanley boss John Coleman admitted: “We looked brittle, which is alarming. We didn’t pick up the second ball and their midfielders were very good.

“It wasn’t our day and you have days like that. We have got to keep going and hope Tuesday’s game at Blackpool is our day.”
