STRIKER MARTIN HAS HIGH HOPES FOR CITY

- By Jamie Holt

BRISTOL City striker Chris Martin believes consistency is key as he set an ambitious target of finishing in the top six.

The 33-year-old former Norwich and Derby forward said: “I see a lot of teams above us that I feel we can challenge. We need to be more consistent, we have the ability. We have the players here if we can keep everybody fit to be challenging further up the table and towards the top six.

“So I don’t see any reason why not, but it’s much easier said than done.

“We need to be more consistent than we have been this season and that’s about trying to string results together.”

With over 100 career Championship goals under his belt, Martin was delighted to add to his tally last week with a brace against Cardiff after a personal drought at Ashton Gate since the start of the season. But he knew all the hard work in training would pay off and hopes for more of the same in Bristol City’s next home game against Reading on February 9.

The former Scotland international added: “I thought about that a few weeks ago (not scoring at Ashton Gate since the opening day).

“It was about time, to be honest, without trying to be too critical in a moment where you’ve scored a couple of goals and won the game.

“It was much needed and even more sweeter to do it against a rival.

“It’s why I’m still in the game, why I’m still doing it after 15 years. Precisely the reason why. You put in all the hours on the training field, all the hours in the gym, for moments like that.

“To see the crowd at the end and to share those moments with the players and the staff and the fans, it’s what makes playing this game so special.”
