ACE SAM TO GIVE THE U’S EXTRA BIT OF FIREPOWER

- By Tom Blackett

OXFORD United have strengthened their squad for the business end of the season by signing striker Sam Baldock – and it continues family ties with the U’s.

The 32-year-old was a free agent after leaving Derby in the transfer window and has swiftly linked up with his former MK Dons boss Karl Robinson at the Kassam Stadium.

His brother George previously played for the U’s while his elder brother James is the current club doctor.

Baldock has left behind a Championship relegation battle at Derby to join a League One promotion tilt with Oxford, who moved fifth with a dramatic 3-2 home victory against ten-man Portsmouth yesterday.

“I used to go to the Manor as a little kid and watch Oxford United and obviously with George and then James being here I have followed the club’s fortunes for a while,” he said.

“Once I knew of the club’s interest it was an obvious choice for me and I am delighted to be here.

“I am still ambitious and want to be part of a successful side and I know the club is moving forward all the time.”

Baldock has bags of experience having played for MK Dons, West Ham, Bristol City, Brighton, Reading and Derby.

Robinson believes it is a good bit of business to bring him in for the final few months of the campaign.

“Sam has scored well over 100 goals in his career and is a very clever player who will strengthen us in another key area,” said Robinson.

“Since the turn of the year we have secured Herbie Kane for the rest of the season, signed Ciaron Brown, Oisin Smyth and Marcus

Browne and now Sam, so we feel we have strengthened every part of the squad. He’s

fit and raring to go.”
