It’s a mixed start for the ‘new’ boys

-

THE managerial merry-go-round has been in full swing over the past week – and the return of a former boss has been a major theme. In the Championship, Peterborough have given Grant McCann the chance to take the reins for a second time, following Darren Ferguson’s decision to call time on his third stint in the Posh hotseat.

In League One, Derek Adams in back in the Morecambe dugout after his fling with Bradford failed to work out, while Paul Simpson has returned to League Two Carlisle to help out his home-town club in their hour of need.

Meanwhile, experienced boss Mark

Hughes has returned to management for the first time since the end of 2018 by taking over at Bradford.

The latter appointment certainly caught the eye and it is going to be fascinating to see how the former Manchester City and Stoke boss fares in the EFL basement with the Bantams.

Yesterday’s 2-0 home reverse against

Nigel Clough’s in-form Mansfield will have given him some idea of the size of the task ahead.

Indeed, there were mixed fortunes for the ‘new’ boys yesterday. McCann would have hoped to have got off to a winning start against his former club Hull, who sacked him last month, but it was the Tigers who went home with the spoils thanks to an impressive 3-0 victory.

Adams’ Morecambe remain two points off safety after their 1-1 home draw against Ipswich. A point wasn’t a bad result for the Shrimps in their predicament, but it could easily have been all three – Wes Burns equalised late on for the Tractor Boys.

At least Simpson enjoyed the sweet taste of victory on his Carlisle return, earning a precious 1-0 win at Leyton Orient – themselves with interim boss Matt Harold in charge – to climb out of the relegation zone.

Joy and pain, success and failure, highs and lows, management has it all – and the recently appointed gaffers will have been reminded of that yesterday. We wish them all well…
